The Story

Pip began at home

I’m Chip - a parent, pianist and the founder of Pip. Music is woven into our family life: my wife Olivia is a singer, and our daughters Gracie and Cleo play several instruments each. But even in a musical household, we know how difficult regular, purposeful practice can be.

I’ve struggled with it myself ever since I started piano aged eight. Years later, a fitness app that helped me follow my trainer’s workouts between sessions sparked a thought: could music teachers give students the same kind of clear, tailored support between lessons?

After years building digital products for creators and artists at YouTube and Warner Music Group, I decided to build it. Pip brings that experience together with the everyday reality of learning music at home, helping teachers turn their intentions into practice, and helping more children keep playing.

We use technology where it can make practice clearer, calmer and more consistent, and judge its value by whether it helps more children keep playing. Technology is the means. Music is the point.

Pip isn’t the practice police. He’s a shy, music-loving parrot who’s here to encourage you, not tell you off.

In fact, he’s your biggest fan: he doesn’t expect every note to be perfect; he just wants you to enjoy making music and giving it a go.

At first, you may only catch a glimpse of him. As you play on more days, Pip grows a little braver and reveals a little more. Earn a Squeak and he comes fully out of hiding to celebrate with you.

Then a new week begins—and Pip gets shy all over again.
